How to Find Cheap Flights Without the Stress

One of the biggest hurdles to traveling—whether it’s across the country or across the world—is the cost of flights. We’ve all been there: excited to start planning, only to feel our jaw drop when we see that ticket price. The good news? Finding cheap flights doesn’t have to be stressful or overwhelming. With a few strategies and the right tools, you can save hundreds and make your travel dreams much more attainable.

Here are my tried-and-true tips for snagging the best deals on airfare—without losing your sanity in the process.

Be Flexible With Your Dates

Flights can vary drastically depending on the day of the week, season, and even time of day. If you’re flexible, you’ll almost always save. Midweek flights (Tuesdays and Wednesdays) are often cheaper, and red-eye or early morning flights can also cut costs.

Pro tip: Use the “flexible dates” option in Google Flights or Skyscanner to see which days have the lowest fares. Sometimes just shifting your trip by a day or two can save you enough to cover a nice dinner or even an excursion at your destination.

Use the Right Tools

You don’t need to manually check dozens of airline websites—thankfully, there are great platforms that do the work for you.

Some of my go-tos:

  • Google Flights – Easy to use, super visual, and great for exploring destinations by price.

    • This is my personal favorite to use!

  • Skyscanner – Perfect for finding budget airlines and comparing across countries.

  • Hopper – Predicts when flights will go up or down and helps you decide whether to book now or wait.

  • Going (formerly Scott’s Cheap Flights) – Sends deal alerts right to your inbox, sometimes for insanely low fares.

Fly Into (or Out Of) Alternative Airports

Don’t forget to check nearby airports! Flying into a smaller or secondary airport can often save you a chunk of cash. For example, if you’re heading to New York City, compare JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark—prices can vary a lot.

If renting a car or taking a train is an option, sometimes the savings are worth the extra drive. See my Road Trips 101 post for more details on how to plan your perfect adventure!

Embrace Budget Airlines (But Read the Fine Print)

Budget airlines like Spirit, Frontier, Ryanair, or EasyJet can be amazing for snagging cheap tickets. The catch? They LOVE to tack on fees. Seat selection, checked bags, and sometimes even carry-ons can quickly add up.

My rule of thumb: if the base fare + all the extras you’ll actually need is still cheaper than a standard airline, go for it. If not, it might not be worth the hassle.

Sign Up For Airline Rewards & Credit Card Programs

Even if you’re not a frequent flyer, signing up for a free airline loyalty program can score you perks (like free seat selection or priority boarding) and help you rack up miles for future trips. Pair that with a travel rewards credit card, and you’ll start earning points you can use toward free or discounted flights.

Don’t worry if you’re not ready to dive into the “travel hacking” rabbit hole yet—even small mileage earnings add up over time.

Book at the Right Time

There’s no magic number, but studies suggest the sweet spot for booking is about 1–3 months out for domestic flights and 2–6 months out for international flights. Waiting until the very last minute usually means higher prices, while booking too early doesn’t always guarantee savings.

Final Thoughts

Finding cheap flights doesn’t have to be stressful—you just need the right mindset and tools. Be flexible, compare prices across platforms, and don’t be afraid to try alternative routes or airlines.

At the end of the day, the goal isn’t just to find the cheapest ticket possible—it’s to save enough on airfare so you can spend more on the experiences that matter most. Because those are the memories you’ll actually take home.

So start searching, stay flexible, and get ready for your next adventure without the sticker shock!
